Although a distant view of this large private pond is possible along Triadelphia Mill Road, a closer and safer view may be obtained from Elliott Road (0.1+ mile east of the intersection of Highland Road and Triadelphia Mill Road). On Elliott Road, drive 0.3 m to a paved deadend left turn that lacks a street sign. This is Sines Road. From the barrier at the end of that road, a view of much of the pond is possible, at least during the winter, or continue along Elliott Road to other views. Trees and shrubs largely block any view until the leaves have dropped. Most of the year there are Canada Geese in the pond, loafing at the edge of the pond, or grazing on the grassy expanse northwest of the pond. It is always worth scanning winter flocks for Snow or Cackling geese, although they are not frequent here. Waterfowl of varying numbers and species are usually present during migration. The choice species recorded here include Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Redhead, and Greater Scaup, as well as the more likely American Wigeon, American Black Duck, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, and Hooded Merganser. Great Egret is an occasional visitor. A few Ring-billed Gulls stop for varying periods. American Pipits have been detected, usually flying over the area. At one time Grasshopper Sparrows and Eastern Meadowlarks were a possibility, but they are highly unlikely now. |
